Petrochemicals

Petrochemicals are essentially chemical products derived from petroleum. Chemical compounds made from petroleum can also be obtained from fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas, or renewable sources such as corn, palm fruit or sugar cane.

Petrochemicals can be classified into 3 primary groups:

  1. Olefins: Ethylene, propylene, butadiene etc. Used in the industrial production of chemicals, plastics and synthetic rubber.
  2. Aromatics: Benzene, Toluene and Xylene. Used in the production of dyes, synthetic detergents, plastic and synthetic fibers.
  3. Synthetic gas: A mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, both of which are used in chemical processes for making ammonia and methanol. While ammonia is used in making fertilizers (urea), methanol is used as a solvent and chemical intermediate.

Petex offers the following petrochemicals on its platform:

  1. Naptha
  2. Benzene
  3. Toluene
  4. Xylene
